Fairy Penguins in Stanley

Staying at Stanley Seaview Inn/Horizon Deluxe Apartments/Rose’s Villa? You’re just moments away from one of Tasmania’s most magical wildlife encounters – watching fairy penguins waddle ashore at dusk.
These tiny birds stand only 33cm tall and return to Stanley’s shores each evening after a day of fishing. Seeing them shuffle up the sand is a heartwarming and unforgettable sight.
Our penguins can be seen at the Godfreys Beach Penguin Viewing Platform. This uses red lighting to protect the penguins, and is the best spot in town for close, respectful viewing. The platform is also wheelchair and pram accessible. The peak season is September to March, when more penguins are active and returning to their burrows.
Our tips to ensure the best experience:
– Arrive a little before dusk.
– Dress warmly, it can be chilly so close to the sea!
– No flash photography, bright lights or loud voices.
– Stay on designated paths.
– Keep a respectful distance from any penguins.
If you would like to take home a little reminder of your penguin encounter, pop into reception to purchase one of our adorable penguin stuffed animals.
